Missionary Dan Email #21 from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

June 29, 2009 by rickety Leave a Comment

Ehx gerel baptism.

Ehx gerel baptism. Daniel on right.

Presented here are portions of Elder Daniel Willoughby’s twenty first email from the Mongolia Ulaanbaatar Mission. If anyone wishes to send Daniel a message, write it in the comments and I will make sure he receives it.

Thanks for the great pictures and the updates about the family. It is always fun to read about it all.

Missionary Work

Ehx gerel was baptized and it went well. She asked me to confirm the Holy Ghost for her. It was good for me to learn how to do it my first time in Mongolian and also first time ever. It went well and I felt the Spirit. She is a good new member with lots of friends.

This week a lot of interesting things happened. My companion for the past couple of weeks has had problems with his eye. He has way bad eyesight so this week they did surgery to fix it. While he was at surgery I went to zone conference with a mini missionary. A mini missionary is a church member preparing to go on a mission. Depending on the circumstances they can do a mini mission for 2 weeks or so, where they are complete full time missionaries. It was fun to be with one at zone conference. Afterwards we went to investigator’s houses and taught a lesson while my companion recovered. Right now he is doing great and recovering quickly.

Then the district leader went on an exchange with my companion this Friday. He has a mini missionary right now so I had the opportunity to again be with a mini missionary. They are incredibly prepared to be missionaries. The mini missionary with me was Ehx bold. He helped me teach the lessons and he is better at speaking Mongolian than I am. I always say they speak Mongolian well. It’s a little joke. We took a picture together; it is the one with the big open sky in the background.

Then I got to go with Elder Romney to his area for Saturday. He is my zone leader and was way cool. He taught me a lot. It was raining for part of the day so some of the streets had a bunch of water in them. We met with a man whose wife is getting ready to attend the temple in America. She met the missionaries while there and joined the church. We went to his house to get his permission so his wife could go to the temple. It went very well and he attended church the next day.

It was great to have so many exchanges in one week. I was almost with another person for every day this week. It was a good learning experience. Zone conference was great. Transfers are this Saturday so we’ll see what happens. I know the church is true!

To Mom

What do I eat… hmm… lets see. Sheep, rice, potatoes with onions. Sometimes with lots of salt. Some days I have noodles, sheep and potatoes. The other day we had sheep and onions in a fried dumpling. And today I ate sheep with peppers and onions on noodles. Basically the same kind of food every day. :) It’s good food. The recipe book was great. I learned how to make gravy and my companion loved it. Most of the things in there are impossible to find or if we do our missionary budget can’t afford it. Like a can of cream of chicken is extremely rare. The other day we found kool-aid. That was delicious. The MTC food is amazing. I haven’t seen salad since I got here.

Love, Elder Willoughby
